This unit will introduce students to the link between food and culture. At the end of this unit, students will be able to understand that: food choices reflect food availability, food choices reflect religion, food choices reflect other influencing cultures, food choices reflect lifestyle, food choices reflect economic standing, food choices reflect personal taste, food choices are important in the celebration of holidays and festivals, describe the meaning of the term “foodways”, the difference between “traditional” diets and “modern” diets, and be able to describe the traditional diets of several groups of people within the United States. Includes lecture material, overheads, handouts, lab options and test. Appropriate for grades 6-12.
